Story | | John went to the part of Derby township which afterwards became Oxford and settled there. He was there in 1718, and was rated on the tax list at 48 pounds sterling.
In Vol. 8, p. 394, Colonial Records, it is stated that "John Towner in 1741 was in the northwest part of Derby, then called Derby Woods." His name is signed to a petition for "society privileges," which was presented to the General Court of Conn. in 1740 and which is on file in the state library at Hartford.2 |

There are provisions in this will for Richard's widow, Deborah, and for all the other sons and daughters, which facts naturally lead to the conclusion that Joseph was then deceased.2 |

Benjamin Towner1

Story | | Prior to 1719, he went to Haddam, Conn. His father conveyed land to him in that town in 1716, and 1723, and the deeds say "to my son Benjamin Towner." He was one of the 100 original proprietors of the town, his name standing 21st on the recorded list. Land was set off to him by the town in 1719, and 1722, 35 acres. He purchased other lands afterwards on several occasions and appears to have acquired much property. In 1727, he was appointed executor of his father's will which was probated in Guilford. He married in Haddam, Abia Shaler. He lived in Haddam till 1738 and then moved to Killingworth, where his wife, Abia, joined the church by letter from Haddam, and where they resided, save for a few of the later years which they spent in Saybrook, till he died Jan 9, 1761, 73 years of age. His gravestone was standing in 1882, in the burial ground of Killingworth.2 |
