Story | | On a church record in New Fairfield, Conn., is this: "Lord's Day, June 25, 1756. Then Mary, wife of Capt. Dan Towner, made a Public Profession of 'ligion' and was admitted a member of this Church." He went from Goshen to New Fairfield before 1752, and resided in the part of the town now named Sherman. Was ensign in 1756, made so by the General Assembly. He was a man of positive influence, representing New Fairfield in the Legislature in the years 1766-7-8 and 1775. He served in the Patriot forces in the revolution with the rank of captain, and was one of the sufferers from poison at Horse Neck, where it was alleged the British poisoned the wells. His recovery was for a long time doubtful and it was due to the great care and devotion of his wife that he was saved. He was much beloved in New Fairfield; later in life he moved to New Milford, Conn., where he died in 1796.2 |

Story | | In 1763 he was living on Phillips Patent with his father; was in the French war, sergt. of company. One of his descendants says that he moved to Vermont; another that he went to Crown Point, NY and owned a large property there. On the breaking out of the war of revolution he remianed loyal to the Crown, and for this his property was confiscated and he was seized by the "Continentals" and imprisoned in Fort Ticonderoga, but made his escape and, making his way down the lake, he went to St. Johns, Canada, before 1776, and with his family permanently settled there. He received grants of land from the Crown, a large portion of which having been entailed to his sons William and Ithiel Crosby and their eldest male heirs. He carried on farming and butchering extensively, had contract for furnishing beef to the British army, and was noted for industry and thrift, and highly respected in the social relations. His descendants constitute a large, if not the largest, branch of RICHARD'S descendants, many of them being in the States of the Middle West and in New England.2 |
