George was born in England about 1642 and was in New England prior to 1665 when his father wrote his will in England. He was in Westerly, Rhode Island at least by 1669 when he bought land.

Westerly, Rhode Island Town Records related to George Lanphear:
· 18 Apr 1669: George bought land from John Clarke where the city of Westerly, Rhode Island is now located.
· 17 May 1671: George took the Oath of Allegiance to Rhode Island.
· 1 Mar 1677/8: George and his wife's conversions to the Seventh-day Baptist Church were recorded in the journal of the Sabbatarian minister Samuel Hubbard. The next day, he was baptized at the "water side at the mill, then bro. [William] Hiscox baptized Geo. Lanphear; he came out rejoicing; his wife went into the water, was faint hearted & came back again un-baptized."
· 17 Sep 1679: George, inhabitant of Westerly, gave his allegiance to the King of England and was made a freeman near that time.
· 22 Sep 1679: George was chosen with others to serve on the town council for a year.
· 26 Mar 1688: 1 Jun 1696, 24 Oct 1699 and 27 Aug 1702: chosen with others as a ratemaker for the town.
· 9 Aug 1688: witnessed the will of Tobias Sanders.
· 12 Aug 1696: chosen clerk of the meeting, signing the minutes George Lanphear.
· 18 Aug 1696: chosen town clerk and directed to levy the town tax.
· 21 Mar 1697: Grand juryman.
· 25 Oct 1699: he was on a committee "for settling country roads" that appeared before the town council on 3 August 1701.
· Sep 1724: George was sued by Nicholas Cottrel for a debt of £10 8s; on the same day, George sued Jonathan Babcock for a debt of £48.²

According to Genealogy of Elder John Crandall and his Descendants (privately published) by A.P. Crandall in 1888, Mary Cottrell, 3rd wife of Eber Crandall was the daughter of Nicholas and Dorothy (Pendleton) Cottrell (page 15). This has been reiterated in Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and His Descendants, published in 1949 by John Cortland Crandall (see page 8).

According to Ancestors in the United States of Byron H. Bierce and his wife Mary Ida Cottrell of Cortland County, New York, compiled by Thurber H. Bierce and Lisle Cottrell, published in 1962 (see page 94-96), this is not possible.

Mary Cottrell that married Eber Crandall is the daughter of John Cottrell, who is an uncle of Nicholas Cottrell that married Dorothy Pendleton. John Cottrell probably married 1st Hannah Gaylord Crandall (mother of Eber Crandall) and subsequent wife whose name is not known is the mother of Mary Cottrell.

Nicholas Cottrell and Dorothy Pendleton had a daughter Mary who died on 2 Dec 1735. Her death date is attributed to Mary Cottrell that married Eber Crandall in Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and his Descendants published in 1949 by John Cortland Crandall. This Mary was born in 1711 and married Nathan Randall 16 Dec 1730 in Westerly, RI and therefore could not be the Mary Cottrell that married Eber Crandall.^4,1,5,3
