Story | | Henry attended Amherst College and was graduated from Harvard Medical College in 1864. In 1863 he was a surgeon in the Mass. militia and later was in various campaigns of the Civil War, including the siege of Charleston. He was appointed medical director of Florida in the last year of the war. After the war he spent two years in Europe studying medicine and became the first American pupil of Joseph Lister. After long and persistent opposition, he finally succeeded in establishing Lister's methods un the United States and should receive credit for introducing antiseptic wound treatment in this country. He published a number of important papers on medical subjects and received many honors, including the Presidency of the American Medical Association in 1891.1 |
